My Memories on the Path
The Master: The Tender Heart of a Musician
“Sing to God Every Day. This Makes You Joyful.” Robert
Robert Adams and His Music: A Sufi Girls Path Back Home
By Elaine L. Woodley
The sweet strains of Beethoven and Chopin filled this beautiful home. But strangely, now I was not at my own childhood home with my now elderly, vibrant parents. Parents who filled our home with these vibrations of higher living every waking moment. Parents who had patiently humored me through my original love of music. Rejection of it as a college student, and then back to relishing ‘living by music’. No, I was in the home of the teacher I had been so moved by several years prior. This tastefully elegant inviting home had a fully set table with china and chai tea, gulab jamin or (‘jammins!’ as many children called it) waiting for me. Most of all, music was filling the house. Here I was to find, the true heart of this ‘Sage’. It was more than imagined.
I had been immediately taken by this teacher’s difference. He was another world from the mostly male encounter group type of ‘teachers’ of that time-his sweetness, natural air of aristocracy as some humble king from another age. He had a total lack of any desire for people to ‘follow’ him. His talks were printed out only on request. He allowed only our audience to have them. He explained that this was a pre destined, very advanced path that most people were not interested in really applying. This made me immeasurably relieved. There were so many outrageously dangerous groups. I had seen. Placid seeming misogynist’s, many outcasts teaching, that I was rarely interested. But due to my own background, I immediately recognized the stable air of a family man. Someone who was not remotely familiar with the world of experimental cults. Of various ‘vile’ activities that were blindly accepted by ‘spiritual tourists’. This was a classy guy. One with a bright heroic streak, seeing much further beyond human sight. We often felt he went to painstaking lengths to carefully and deeply help us in the most absurd of questions. His presence shamed shoddy behavior. He seemed to glow. I understood this more in his dialogue on how one, then the world, begins to glow, a few years ago. This glow, one of my favorite talks, is mentioned briefly in my daily guide, Silence of the Heart. The glow is poetry in motion.
But the music. I had not expected the music. Although I refuse to buy into ‘age consciousness,’ I had observed that ‘the ways of the world’ often changed spiritual students unless they remained light hearted. One of the ways was that as some became less ‘accomplished’ outwardly than the mainstream of the world. This made them compensate by imagining they were somehow more spiritual than the worlds artists. This was a common transparent attempt that separates us from the One. My background with my parents, devout Sufis and musicians, defined the truth of the relationship of God through music. But I had never met a teacher, other than studying Hazarat Khan and Pir Vilayet Khan, that realized illumination through music, poetry and continuing this as their mainstay. continued at the bottom of this page

The Robert Adams Institute Joyfully Serving in Spiritual Integrity for Sixteen Years.
“Your spiritual stature is shown by your love for all living beings. By your love for the animal kingdom. You feel the same love for the animal kingdom as you do in all pervading, love omniscient, bliss consciousness. The same Supreme Self, God, Omniscient Reality, is in all. Your actions then begin to reflect this love, this compassion. You wish to go out of your way to assist the animal kingdom, to protect them. This is your natural state. You were created to live in harmony, in non- harm, ahimsa, with the Animal Kingdom.”
Ponder This
“If you really had compassion, could you eat meat? You absorb the suffering, the pain, the terror of the animal.”
The love of animals in harmonious beauty, gentility and deep sacred respect, is a primary aspect of the Message of the great Sage, Robert Adams. Residing in the modern American suburbs in a multi-generational Indian style family complex, hundreds of people received his beloveds wife’s introduction to the complete educational integration of animal compassion, a delicious non harm based diet, and the bodies absolute lack of requirement for meat from a nutritional fact based foundation. Robert Adams walked in close, touching and devoted dedication to the animals, contributing to several animal welfare groups, and adopting many animals raised in deep spiritual communication and natural spiritual healing. Together with his daughter, they released several dialogues and publicly published articles on animal compassion and spiritual unfoldment.
He was accompanied by his ‘temple guard dog’ loyal companion, a devoted Shi Tzu given to him by his daughter, lovingly nicknamed ‘Metwi’, for many years day and night. Arising at sunrise to walk for miles with him, he never left his side, and became his supernal protector and serviceful companion as his outer body grew weak. When he could no longer walk, Robert Adams picked him up and carried him for miles for his morning walk. Robert Adams beloved wife, a credentialed vegetarian nutritionist who appeared teaching gourmet vegetarian fare her own television show while a college co-ed, as well as his devoted children, are well established internationally in the development and integration of unique and all-encompassing merciful non- violent diets, a deeply compassion based ahimsa (non-harm) and gourmet vegetarian lifestyle food preparation in educational programs, spiritual communities, television, cookbooks and children’s education. Their family pet companions all lived to exceed the commonly accepted life span, in a loving bond of deep camaraderie.

Homeage to Beloved Mrs. Adams,
My love to dear Mrs. Adams how I miss our daily talks of such perceptions! Your feasts and parties are our formative years of the magical discourses in the flower gardens. May your work with the children continue in your full enthusiasm and warmth!...
Ronald Donaldson
Please forward my respects to our mother Adams in overflowing gratitude and seamless love. Your wisdom and guidance in miraculous interventions with the soul of students and children brought home the simple forgotten art of nurturning as divine mother.
Student: How should we treat children?
Robert: How should you treat children? Treat children as
if they were Gods. Love them with all your heart and with all your soul. If
you really love children the love that you feel for them will encompass
them also. And they will become loving children. I don't mean love them
with a human idea of love. I mean really love them. With all your heart
and all your soul. See them as a sacred being. See them as a God. And
realize divine right action is pouring itself through them. See only the
goodness in them. Become an example for them. Do not tell them to do
anything that you wouldn't do yourself. Children become what they see
not what they hear.
Therefore if there is peace in your home, if there is love in your
home, there is joy in your home, I mean real peace, real love, real joy
they have to pick it up. It has to pour into them. And they will react with
love and with peace and with joy. They will grow up to be kind,
compassionate, beautiful human beings and this will become a new
world.
So again become an example of love and compassion and
peace. Whenever you look at them or think about them. Look at them
with love and compassion and joy and peace and then you'll be
surprised what happens.

Deep blessings spiritual family, how are you? I wanted to convey my regard for your incredible grace and dignity in the absurd cyberbullying and theft of Roberts works. Goodness it is unimaginable that anyone could read his words and miss the entire point by transgressing every spiritual law he explains. (Grown ups with secret buttons and tunnels goodness gracious!!) Although a lesson in right action I am so very relieved to see the taken fraud photocomputer made shopped picture of your dear Robert removed from the chaotic site of one he had originally banned from our class transcribing. And so peace reigns within and without. But you are a better soul than I, patience, grace dignity personified! We love you and remain in full loyalty in that love that never changes. Robert comes through you and your love. I can't wait to get started on my benevolence project presents again! Is it really October already? Timelessness....

.....We would especially like to thank Mrs. Adams for her interest in us and our enthusiasm for Robert and his teachings.
Premananda has expressed personally to me his love for Robert Adams, a real hero in his life, now and during his own spiritual search. He is especially interested in Robert’s connection with Sri Ramana Maharshi, as Ramana was such a powerful guide and inspiration in Premananda’s life.
He also fully welcomes Mrs. Adams at any time to visit us.
I don’t know if she travels now, but if she comes to Europe at any time then she will have a warm-hearted place to stay in Germany, with people who would love to meet her, hear about her life, and hear about Robert.
I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with with me
Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be.
With God as our Father, brothers all are we
Let me walk with my brother, in perfect harmony.

Mrs. Adams, the beautiful letters and books you sent me reminded me of the joyous days of happiness we shared together in Sunday Feasts. I will never forget the lessons you taught me on nurturing, and your grace in giving, and English tea! Thank you ever more, Katie.
Dear Mother Adams,
Your light has shined with practical love on us for so may years, words cannot express. As Robert says, "You actions speak louder than your words." Your example of spiritually guiding so many lost children instilled in me the desire to be a teacher. Your beautiful family life in a normal traditional vehicle held so many jewels that shone into my heart. Thank you for all of the books when I needed assistance without funds. I live for the yearly Tribute and visits with you and the laughter. You taught me self respect as a woman in a society of some very strange male false spirituality that is dangerous and unfounded. I can feel your happiness and I just smile naturally with deep peace.
Love, Jenneffer Louise Gateson
Thank you so much. Many blessings to you

Memories on the Path
The Master: The Tender Heart of a Musician
“Sing to God Every Day. This Makes You Joyful.” Robert
Robert Adams and His Music: A Sufi Girls Path Back Home
By Elaine L. Woodley
Continued ... from top of this page
The lovely surprise of discovering Roberts quiet love of ‘living by music’ as my parents did, clicked in me. A relaxed, genuine aura of the esoteric, “within this worlds beauty’. That day I arrived nervously at the home for both an interview and a supper invitation. I expected a stereotypical “I am a guru” scenario much as the strange interviews of so called ‘Advaitists’ in the spiritual magazines. They were, in general, when not disturbingly semi sociopathic (“ Nothing I do matters for there I no good or bad so I am great the way I am.) in clearly troubled seekers of fame, was an overly confident relaying of Indian words. These words did not ring in synchronicity with the speaker. In short, summarized as often disturbingly irresponsible.
Robert teaches to bless someone with our silence rather than saying anything less than uplifting, i.e. hurtful, so I will end the topic of my interviews of famous teachers up until that day, on that note. Of another note, Robert never spoke an ill word of anyone. He refused to discuss other teachers or students. He abhorred gossip as the ultimate ego illusion to diminish others. However, he did state to us that certain actions or practices were ‘vile’. This was explained as hurting animals, children, women, behaving badly, participating in ‘adult’ media, etc. He pretty much espoused the spiritual guideline as the Eastern foundations of Vedas have for over one thousand years.
That day I was overwhelmed with the comfortable hospitable air that was more similar to the home in The Sound of Music (after the captain started singing!) than the usual “I sit quietly all day and am vastly superior to those with a life” ambiance. Robert was as a timeless One.
As I entered the private home, it was large, airy regal and refined- tasteful but warmly welcoming. It was clear that a large loving family lived here. But surprise. More dramatically, the familiar aura of the musician-spiritual gentle hearts. Those who touch the earth with ingrained goodness was here.
I was greeted with joyful abandon. The highest of manners about my comfort and welcome. There was much joking and feeling ‘one of the family’ in a clearly cultured house. The evening started with Chopin and Beethoven playing and ended with Ravi Shankar.
Three family members played outstanding harp, flute and guitar, as Robert sat in his velvet chair and simply glowed with love and appreciation. A few years ago an article was written by Dana La Monica that brought all those memories back. She stated “Robert came alive when he was with his family” comically dancing around the room, joking and laughing. In satsang, he displayed pride and protectiveness with his wife. And the music. It was magical. This reminded me so deeply of my personal background. It was as if I was home once again. Quite a welcome into the spiritual teaching I would spend the rest of my life in. Robert teaches, “This is a merciful universe. A gracious universe. For every apparent suffering there is a hidden blessing of sorts. It is up to you to become humble, and discover it.”
Therein began my discovery into the quiet world of my teacher love of music. From the heart of a true musician rather than an observer. As any true artist, Robert became the music rather than listened to it. He ‘beautified’ whatever environment he was in. Not just with his tender ways. With ‘the compassion of a saint’. But in his home as well. Music, well- loved children of unusual grace and consideration. I was then regularly invited to the ‘inner circle’ dinners, more resembling banquets, of endless platters of food all prepared by his dear wife. Her laughter was pure refuge. She explained that on weekends they went out to eat, and Robert, always counseling calls or visiting with his children, took a few hours to simply lay on his back and simply listen to ‘cool jazz’. Interestingly, traditional jazz has been discovered to be the forte of the highly spiritual, creative and spontaneous individual who ‘channel’ rather than deliberate. This reminded me of his talk of spontaneous living, a favorite. It was so refreshing to find my spiritual path expressed in a home to close to the energy of my own home of piano and symphony playing. He too, lived creating a world a bit above and beyond the more crude levels of our existence, as he taught of our true origin. “Perform your role in life with great loving kindness. With respect.”
But there were more surprises of this ‘spiritual giant’ as Robert refers to ‘real saints and sages’. One memorable day fondly recalled by a handful of visitors was when to our surprise, Robert played the music of Willie Nelson as he comically danced a few steps! This occurred to the laughter and delight of the usually unnecessarily somber crowd.
On another afternoon, he reviewed a few inner circle guests gifts of music videos. They chose this gift because they had never visited his home when music was not on. “You do not have to drop out of the world. Become weird. Yet you have to realize where your true home is.” In his dedication to making us all comfortable, he jokingly nodded and graciously took a few humorous steps to the music videos. to lift spirits. Lifting spirits was always his priority. There was one well known singer who was singing lyrics of the explicit genre that he immediately turned off. Another had derogatory terms that he shook his head at. When he did this, it was simple and unassuming, not harsh or demanding. He himself did not wish to be in that environment. Nor did he engage it in his lovely home. But there was still the lilting sound of music.
Birds seemed to gather around all the windows in his home and his amazing gardens which his wife Nicole seemed to miraculously tend with a green thumb. She was feeding and cutting roses at dawn. Healing and saving dry plants for hours in the immaculate cleanliness of her home. She did this all in between counseling women students and designing here own lace products for Nordstrom department store. But it was the tender unknowns that struck my heart in appreciating the sage that filled the atmosphere with music 24 /7. The rare tidbits and nuances of his nature that endeared him to us.
I was informed that Robert had actually been invited to join a famous jazz band a teenager. Later in life, a well known film actor listened to him speak and invited him to act and play music in his next movie. Roberts humble laughter emerged as he shook his head without offending, taking the gracious role. As mentioned, Robert attended Hollywood Bowl classical concerts regularly with his family, sitting under the California stars as pianist played Chopin. (* Robert Adams years of attending the Hollywood Bowl membership classical concerts under the stars with his family for years, are detailed in humorous and moving narratives in the Infinity JOURNAL and the book Pure Advaita no Agenda by Dr. Blake Warner) I also attended as he attended all of the community classical concerts at the park across the street of his later day home with family, bringing picnic lunches. There is a truly amazing photograph of Robert and his daughter at the Beverly Hills Hotel dressed in white after teaching together, on Fathers Day. I was thrilled to share that Robert loved the outdoor Spanish bands playing in the hotels restaurant on Fathers Day. He knew each musician. He always went out of his way to compliment them. The secure familiarity with a world of amazingly beautiful music and solid spirituality was a waterfall of inner freedom for me. Suddenly every word he spoke came alive in my soul. My entire being moved in a clarity so powerful, that I literally was called ‘a different person, a beautiful person’ by relations and neighbors that had previously been, ummm… less than fond of me.
In retrospect, this change was due to two reasons. Those familiar with the Sufi path in America in the last thirty years will understand my unusual orientation. The effect the relationship with music in Robert Adams teaching change me. Originating in Hazarat Khan and his son and now grandson, the Sufi movement of the seventies-eighties included two large family based communities and regular retreats around the country that featured incomparable, gorgeous spiritual music. All participants joined in in choirs all day long. Sufi dancing was the foundation of our spiritual life. A freedom of spirit and channeling of high spiritual energies at times rang of the angels. This natural elevation provided an energy focus for youth that usually turns to clubs, concerts or unhealthy relationships.
Music and dancing in large circles with four dozen people under a full moon in the gardens of a grand manor was everyday fodder for me. It is an ancient attunement going back thousands of years in spirituality. Even todays religions, including modern Christians have rediscovered the art of spiritual circle dancing and the joy of this tradition But it is based on a deeper tradition of utilizing all of the senses for spiritual attunement rather than dismissing them. Stating you are above them is a common scenario for elder spiritual followers now invalidated from the mainstream of youth culture. Many may pretend they are too spiritual for music out of an inner mourning for the youthful joy of this freedom of spirit that enlivens our true nature. My parents were college professors who adopted this ecstatic lifestyle without the dismissal of everyday family traditions. Today, they both still enjoy this spiritual dance throughout the country at retreats they teach.
When we discovered the deep musical refrain throughout Roberts Teaching and person, there was a knowing resonance. This teacher relays the ultimate. “The highest Truth.” Just contemplating his discourses on the graciousness of the universe can invoke Samadhi. But the commonalities of his integration of music in each day, and each discourse in every one of his talks I attended awakens a rare melody. A melody of blissful comfort.
The Sufis teach that music is the blissful language of the soul. The gift of God to soar above this world. Life was meant to be a basis to approach God, instead of bleakly, in an artificial attempt at feigned spiritual superiority. In the schedule of this teacher talks there was always music. It captured me. For it engaged all of the attribute; spirit, heart, mental surrender.
It revealed the solidity of his stature, in infinity. The resonance of his same classic schedule never changed. First a talk that flooded the soul with Truth. An unplanned question and answer session. A sharing of edible refreshment, then live music, only a portion of which was Eastern. A love overwhelmed us, not rebuking to be quiet, but a tide of grace, natural spiritual carriage, and ‘suddenly there was God” to loosely quote Tennessee Williams.
My favorite part of the years with Robert and Nicole were there home music celebrations. It was said it was as if you were visiting Krishna Loka. Beauty everywhere, warmth, laughter and unconditional love that rebirthed our hearts. In equal freedom of soul were Roberts bandharas. They were full Sundays of spiritual celebrations of the arts. Robert allowed poets, dancers and musicians full fledged platforms in the spirit of the ancient celebrations of India. He sat in glowing solidarity with each song, waving his hands or blowing bubbles. He would invoke a spirit of innocence and lightheartedness following sobering introspection. When I see the wise hierophant Robert Adams blindly categorized inaccurately,, in strange ‘non dual stillness’ groups that have multiplied exponentially in the last ten years, I breathe deeply and hum his favorite songs. I dive into the infinity of the powerful gatherings. In his group of primarily Indian and American artist and college professors that gathered around him in idyllic ponds of blissful harmony. And I sing. I sing with the Sage who sang louder than any of us, pitch being a non issue. Total joy - washing us clean.
I was fortunate enough to enjoy the Golden Tribute video immediately following its release. There Robert shared moment in his private family home refusing anyone to care for him but his wife. People arrived from around the world and visited for weeks. Through it all, day after day, Robert played “I Will Be Thine Always’ without ceasing, as each person came and left. As he awoke at dawn. As he ate. “I Will Be Thine Always…My Lord…I Will Be Thine Always.”
I glanced the small black recorder on his nightstand appearing in the film momentarily that he never turned off, sleeping all night to classical music playing., “Devotees may come, devotees may go…” His wife preparing his meals as they ate together, as he took her hand. “I Will Be Thine Always”. As they allowed group after group into their private family home. Each to tea, meals and love. And still the music played, filling the house. The words by Paramahansa Yogananda who Robert met and called a ‘spiritual giant’. Devotee may come.. devotees may go….devotees may come… devotees may go..But, I Will Be Thine Always.” As he held his children’s hands…” I Will Be Thine
Always….” As night fell….”I Will Be thine Always.”
Robert, in infinity, in your respectful service, we will be yours always.
Thank you for your music.
May we forever sing your song.

Dear Dr. Warner- As a teacher and youth leader I highly applaud…was taken by surprise, by the powerful impact of the children’s lessons. ‘Pondering’ our lessons together my son and I have entered a valuable and heightened level in our relationship. There is nothing remotely of this top notch spiritual level out there of such mastery.
This plus the fact that you ‘get’ children, with such joyful energy and optimism but also concerns that they are rooted in. I must say I have had a bit of a blast myself reading them and singing the music with my son. Every grown up who thinks he is spiritual should take a kid break and enjoy such things.
Looking forward to the next series of your sacred Robert Adams Malibu classes. Truly a fount of light. As my son said last night, as I habitually succumbed to worried thoughts, “Don’t worry mom, all is well deep down!” All of my love, Carolyn SF NM
