"This has been my experience."

The Compassionate Heart

The first way is the person with the soft heart. A devotional nature. They may be emotional. They may be moved deeply by others' pain, for they see. It is unnatural to ignore suffering. In India this is the nature of the Bhakta. You may be a wonderful parent. A wonderful teacher, husband, wife, for you manifest your divine nature in your relationships.

You must have reached a certain level of spiritual attainment to have taken birth with a compassionate heart. This is not so common. No matter what someone's so called karma is, it is your karma to help. You will be amazed at what will happen to you. You will begin to see your True Self. An unfathomable beauty will begin to exude from you.

A beauty above this world. And of course, since the body creates karma, you will relieve your own suffering and attract more harmonious environments for your spiritual path to progress, where it is not so hard, there are good people around you, etc.

The Way of Understanding

The second way is that of the person who does not have a natural inclination towards compassion. Their spiritual path is limited. They must eventually embrace this virtue in the process of Awakening. You cannot Awaken without it.

So they attempt a mental understanding. That we are all One. That there is no separation other than in illusion. That what we do to others, we are doing to ourselves. This makes sense to them. They do not want to suffer. So they begin to be compassionate. Or at least to try. They begin to release bad habits towards others. Jealousy. Resentment. False motives. Anger. Revenge. And in so doing, they free themselves. And reduce their personal suffering.

This is good. Or some may simply read the scriptures. All scriptures emphasize compassion. There is no true spiritual path that does not. If it does not, it is not a true spiritual path. So they may just act on faith. That the scriptures are right. On trust. This is good too. Eventually it will become a Truth within their being.

There will be no other choice. No other way to be. The path of mental understanding is like slowly sweeping the debris, the cloudiness from the path in front of you until you see a clear and shining way to the Consciousness of Bliss. The path of natural compassion is like diving into a pool of Bliss without having to sweep. All is revealed to you. You are jumping into your True Nature. It is a most powerful way.

What of Non-Attachment?

We are in a dream. How do we get out of the dream? How do we return to our natural state of Awareness of who we are? The pure Consciousness is known as enlightenment. As God Awareness. As The Kingdom of Heaven that is within you. How to get out of this dream business? How to transcend this state? By non-attachment. By non-attachment to the experiences in our own lives.

Some people get this backwards, to be more comfortable. To mistakenly interpret that if we are non-attached to our children, families, friends, we run away from our responsibilities. We do not meet the needs of those around us. Then follows unhappy relationships. More karma. This is backwards. We are meant to meet the needs of others in any way of kindness we can. A true spiritual aspirant puts themselves last, and others first. In this way, much suffering ceases. For we find ourselves surrounded by loving people. By more harmonious circumstances. This makes the path easier. We align ourselves with the way of Truth.

This is not just being nice. This is a powerful vehicle of Awakening. You go beyond the dream state, beyond the ups and downs of attachments, by realizing that when you react to conditions, to person, place, or thing, you are perpetuating the dream. Relieving the suffering of others is not reacting. It is manifesting your True Self. You can tell where you are by the way you react to life.
